Drivers risk car insurance chaos when defrosting windscreens this winter – ‘Might not be able to claim’

Many drivers admitted to potentially dangerous practices when defrosting their car windscreen. Experts are urging motorists to be safe this winter when defrosting their vehicles or they could be slapped with major insurance issues.

A quarter of motorists are putting themselves at risk of having their insurance invalidated by leaving their cars running unattended while de-icing, according to a new survey.

The concerning findings reveal that 25 per cent of drivers admit to this dangerous practice during cold weather, despite the significant risk of theft and potential insurance implications. Most policies would not cover vehicle theft in such circumstances, leaving drivers financially vulnerable if their car is stolen while left running unattended.

Other concerning findings included: One in five drivers admitted to operating their vehicles without fully clearing snow, ice or debris from their windscreens. An equal proportion, 20 per cent of respondents, confessed to driving through floodwater or fords, putting themselves at risk. The research additionally revealed concerning security practices, with 19 per cent of drivers admitting they have left their cars unlocked while making quick stops.

Huge change to car insurance affects drivers from January 1st, 2025

A fresh car insurance rule change comes into effect in January with road users to enjoy extra freedoms. Motorists travelling abroad this year are set to take advantage of a major car insurance rule change introduced today.

From January 1 2025, British drivers can now bring up a car insurance Green Card on their mobile phone instead of having to carry a printed copy. Green cards are an international certificate of insurance that proves motorists have enough coverage to drive in certain countries.

Up until now, road users had to carry printed documentation on trips but the changes mean holidaymakers can enjoy the convenience of just using a mobile device. From the beginning of 2025, either an electronic PDF or a printed copy will be accepted by authorities using the system.

The new update is due to a collaboration between the MIB (Motor Insurers’ Bureau) and COB, the administrators behind the Green Card system. Angus Eaton, CEO at MIB, said: “Expanding the use of digital Green Cards is a significant step forward in simplifying cross-border travel experiences for motorists.”

“By allowing all drivers to carry a digital Green Card on a mobile device, instead of a physical copy, this makes the process of taking a vehicle abroad quicker and easier for everyone involved.”

The cards are not mandatory to drive inside the European Union as the UK is a member of the Green Card Free Circulation Area (GCFCA). However, a card may be needed for trips to Albania, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Iran, Israel, Moldova, Morocco, Russia, Tunisia, Turkey, and Ukraine.
